Location: STANDALONE Gallery, 160 Dalston Lane, London E8 1NG
Time: 2pm-3:30pm (1.5 hours)
Event description:
Sessions will use informal improvisation tools, movement and dialogue to explore yourself, your connection to music and build community. You don't need any formal dance training to participate in this experience.
This workshop is part of a wider exhibition by artist ILĀ, and offers a chance to engage more deeply with the themes of the show through movement. It will be led by one of the artists involved in ILĀ's opening night on the 4th of June, giving you a unique chance to move to ILĀ's music.
During the session, artist Rovaneche will create a live painting in response to your movement, capturing the energy and expression of the space as you dance.
The session will be led by Ballet Queer's founder and choreographer, Jonathan Watkins, who has been a dancer for over 20 years, including with the Royal Ballet and recently collaborated with John Grant to create a new dance production, 'A Single Man'.
In trainers or comfortable shoes for moving, we will play games and warm up our bodies. Next, we will work with questions from and music by ILĀ to create movements that come from your body and are within your capabilities. There will be time at the end for casual conversation and discussion between the group. This is an open workshop, and everyone is warmly invited to take part.

An improvised performance of music ILĀ will develop across two months of experiments at 160 DL. Moving from the intimacy of her singular voice to an expanse of live electronics and quantum synthesisers, ILĀ’s draws on ideas of collapse, entanglement, and the un/reality of the world as we know it. A body and a voice, making sense of the chaos.
The opening night will feature a live improvised dance performance by Felicity Chadwick, a Rambert-trained dancer and member of Ballet Queer, the UK's first LGBTQ+ ballet company. Her improvisation will unfold as a live response to ILĀ's music, bringing two distinct artistic voices into dialogue between sound and body.

Rovaneche's live art is visceral and immediate — a physical reckoning with the human form and its intimacies. His mark-making is high-octane and passionate, each line arriving as if from instinct, charged with equal measures of love, loss and hope. Searing text moves through his work like a second voice, inseparable from the imagery it accompanies. For the opening of COHERE, Rovaneche will paint live in direct response to ILÄ — his canvas shaped in real time by her presence, her sound, her becoming. Every gesture a mystery. Every mark a translation.
MESONOXIAN performance: This intimate performance piece marks a decade since the release of ILÄ's debut record, MESONOXIAN. Released before ILÄ's transition, under a former name, Mesonoxian, meaning pertaining to midnight, presents a complex site of reflection. Rather than erase this foundational work, ILÄ confronts and reclaims it, embarking on a transformative act of painting directly onto the original CD artwork. This intervention creates a potent dialogue, offering no singular truth about continued identity, but rather a fluid exploration of self through time. For ILÄ, looking back reveals a palpable transness woven into the very fabric of the album, now brought to the fore.
